Saturday.....This was my first time to Briggs and what a treat. As with most of us in Central Iowa they need snow too but what snow they do have the groomer has set up very well. Got on the classics first and did the woodland loop including Whitetail, which by the way is appropriately named, and it was in great shape up to the top of the hill where there is bare rock - BE CAREFUL HERE. The track is pretty shallow in some spots but what a beautiful trail.
Moved to the golf course and while it holds great promise with good snow and no wind, the track was in not so good shape by noon. On the other hand, the rolling hills make for some super fun skiing. Then it was back to the woods to try the 7B trail and I made it down to the double bridge crossing before having a binding failure and turned around. This is thin too, on top of a paved trail so be careful on the thin spots. Temps were in the mid teens and my kick wax was Swix Blue V30. It worked just ok as I was experiencing some icing. Green 20 would have been better or maybe VR30.
I didn't skate but it too was quite variable due to the wind.
Thank you to the folks who work Briggs Woods, this is a great ski location!
