TOPIC: LIME CREEK CONSERVATION AREA TRAILS
The Conservation Board staff have initiated cross country ski trail grooming activities for the 2010-2011 winter season. Bicyclists and horseback riders are reminded that effective immediately all designated multi-purpose trails at the Lime Creek Area are closed for the winter months.
The woodland trails have been groomed for diagonal stride/classic skiing and the conditions range from poor to very good. Due to the lack of any pre-existing snow base, the initial rainfall, the strong winds and cold temperatures the ski surface has no snow in some spots, is icy & rutted in others and allowed for excellent track setting in certain protected areas.
The trail around Quarry Lake has been packed with the snowmobile and all recreational walkers, snow shoe enthusiasts and dog walkers are asked to utilize that trail for their winter activities. As a reminder hikers and other foot-powered traffic on the groomed ski trails damages the trail for cross country skiing. Due to a very short winter ski season we strongly urge cooperation from all users, to respect the groomed ski trails when optimum conditions exist.
The skate ski or freestyle prairie loops were packed with a roller by the volunteer group on Sunday and the conditions are similar to those described for the woodland areas.
At Wilkinson Park in Rock Falls an initial rolling/packing of the expanded ski trail venue was completed Monday morning. Due to the nature of that site much of the trail is icy or wind blown and does not present itself for recreational skiing yet. Snowmobile traffic is no longer allowed in the Wilkinson Park area, per policy set by the Conservation Board at their November 2010 Board meeting.
