The trails at the Mines of Spain Recreation Area were groomed on Thursday afternoon. We had 10.5 inches of snow. But winds caused the snow to move around creating areas that have 2-3 inches and some areas over a foot of snow. The Prairie Ridge Trail is groomed for Skate Skiing and also Classical Skiing. The Cedar Ridge Trail is groomed for Classical Skiing only.
The Prairie Ridge Trail has some changes this year. The skate and classical trails are seperated on 95% of the system . The classical runs inside the skate trail and has about a 5 foot buffer of prairie grass in betweeen them . The only place they run together is thru a short piece of forest.
The skate trail is a bit rough. The snow was deep in places and difficult to flatten completely out. If this snow stays, we will have a good base.
The Iowa Shotgun Deer Season is on until December 20 and hunting is allowed for deer in the Mines of Spain and include the two ski trails.
Enjoy the skiing and pray for more snow. Only 2-3 inches and not 9-12.
