Squaw Creek Park - Marion/Cedar Rapids - 1/24

Conditions: Clear, sunny, 4 degrees F, snow was firm, trail was wide. Trail had been rolled recently but there were no tracks set. On one section the comb had been used and the corduroy was very good. Skate skiing would have been better than striding--but I brought my classical skis. For some reason a tractor went down part of the trail. (Maybe the groomer got stuck and needed assistance??) The trail needs to be regroomed and a track set.
This is a new groomed trail system in its first year of existence by the Linn County Conservation Department. Trailhead is near the bottom of the sledding hill on the creekside of the road. It has great potential. It is mostly flat or gently rolling as it follows Squaw Creek. It is a great trail for beginners. Scenic views with lots of deer sightings. Also, there is the possibility of very nice classic-only groomed trails in the wooded portions of this large park. Keep your eye on this trail network!
